The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

The North Shore-LIJ Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers are comprised of multidisciplinary teams of specialists who care for patients with seizures and related disorders. The team includes a staff of epileptologists, neurosurgeons specializing in epilepsy, EEG technologists, a social worker from the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, an epilepsy pharmacist, a neuroradiology physicist, a psychiatrist with special expertise in epilepsy management, a nurse practitioner and a team of neuropsychologists. Services include outpatient and inpatient consultative services, an inpatient epilepsy-monitoring unit, outpatient video-EEG monitoring with the use of digitrace monitoring systems, brain mapping, epilepsy surgery, and intraoperative electrocorticography. The center, which serves the greater Long Island, Queens, and New Hyde Park regions, places great attention upon meeting the comprehensive needs of individuals with seizure disorders. Epilepsy specialists from the LIJ Comprehensive Epilepsy Center also provide on-site consultative services at ACLD (Association for Adults and Children with Learning Disabilities), AHRC (Association for the Help of Retarded Children), UCP of Nassau County (United Cerebral Palsy) and the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island. The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has also recently created the END School of EEG Technology in collaboration with SUNY at Farmingdale.

Alan B. Ettinger, M.D. - Neurologist in Long Island, NY Alan B. Ettinger, M.D. is Chief of the Division of Epilepsy and Electroencephalography, Department of Neurology, at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York, and the EEG division of North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, New York, and director of the Huntington Hospital Seizure Monitoring Program in Huntington, New York. He is Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Vice-Chairman of Neurology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Ettinger has focused his research activities on the topic of psychiatric issues in epilepsy. He has been a principal investigator in numerous investigational antiepileptic drug trials and is currently performing epidemiological research on depression and anxiety in community-based epilepsy patients. A recent interest has been in mood instability in adolescents with epilepsy.

Dr. Ettinger has directed several national and regional epilepsy symposia. He has published widely in peer-review journals on depression in epilepsy and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, has edited a journal supplement and two textbooks. He has co-authored the book "The Essential Patient Handbook: Getting the Health Care You Need - From Doctors Who Know" (Ettinger AB, Weisbrot DM. Demos), a guide for teaching patients to advocate for their needs when meeting with the physician.

Dr. Ettinger is also on the editorial board of several epilepsy journals, has served on national committees of the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society and the Epilepsy Foundation of America, as well as the International League Against Epilepsy, and is the moderator at the psychiatric interest group sessions at the annual American Epilepsy Society meetings.

Dr. Ettinger is president of the Long Island Epilepsy Foundation Professional Advisory Board and is a member of the national Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. He was the recipient of the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island's 2004 Professional Achievement Award and the co-recipient of the March of Dimes Long Island Chapter's humanitarian award in October 2004. In preceding years, he has often been cited in Castle and Connelly's and New York Magazine's guide to the best doctors.
